Yotaphone 2 2min hands-on
Recently the yotaphone 2 caught my eye. The concept of this android phone is very interesting. It has two screens, one normal front facing screen and one e-ink screen on the back. The concept is brilliant as the e-ink screens use a lot less power. My first thought was that this would be great for reading ebooks on Kindle, or for stretching battery life if your phone battery is about to die. The flyer called out that at 15% of battery life left this phone would last for another 100 hours if you use just the e-ink screen. And that is a killer feature for heavy phone users or user that want to use their phone for an extend time. Think of the usages this could enable for: train conductors, service engineers, store assistants, heavy tweeters etc. When playing around with it I also noticed the feature to change the back cover to whatever picture you like best and that’s cool, you can basically change your case whenever you feel like it. And reading up on it there is a ton more you can do with it. Walking away I couldn’t distance myself from the thought that this phone should have been an Amazon phone as E-ink screen & e-books are a killer usage model for e-reading. It would just make so much sense to have your phablet as your erader with the e-ink screen in your pocket, all the time. However quite to my disappointment I learned that the Kindle app will work but it apparently lacks a critical feature to refresh the e-link from time to time to prevent ghosting. The build in yota ebook app does offer this but to my knowledge does not allow you to read your books on Amazon. I really like the concept but the price (700 euro) was a shocker. But still the idea is pretty good and time will tell if this feature is worth the money.
