Just before travelling to San Francisco for business I realized that I had an oppertunity to do some night photography in this city. Thing is that i’ve never really done that and I wanted to get it right as I don’t get a chance to San Francisco too often. So after some online research I bumped into Eric Gould a local photographer that was kind enough to help me out. For me, the whole experience was more about learning the camera setting and understanding what to look for rather then getting the actual shots. Ok ….honestly said i did have some killer shots in mind. However before even arriving I already learned my first lesson. Eric asked me what kind of shots i wanted and he started scouting locations ….. that is a lesson in itself. It turned out that one skyline shot i had in mind can only be made from a specific hotel skydeck. And that skydeck is not open to the public, they will only allow photographers for a fee, a small fee of 2195 dollar to be exact ! So that was never going to happen. The next lesson was about timing. For some reason i always his this picture in my mind that night photography really happend at night. Turns out that not really the case. The key moments in time are the moment for twilight and twilight. After that it’s just dark early in the evening or late in the evening. Lesson number three was weather. Unfortunately the day we planned our little trip it became foggy. Very foggy ! And that ruined my changes to take some of the photo’s I had in mind. I learned a bunch more stuff that night but in the end it comes down to a good tridpod, knowing your camera settings and learning from an expert like Eric. I really enjoyed this experience. And i made a start in night photography !
